Started the day off with a rolling metric, the Tour de Peach, in Gaffney, SC. There weren't any real climbs but there was a good deal of elevation gained on the rolling course. It starts near what I am assuming might be a water tower made to look like a giant peach. It begins with a loop north of Gaffney that contained most of the day's minor climbs-none of which exceeded two-hundred feet. Got to see a troop of tom turkeys flexing and gobbling in someone's yard that made for a good start to the ride. Roads were in good shape and little traffic. Northern loop was near twenty miles long before returning to Gaffney. The last forty miles only had a couple of small climbs but gently descended for a few rolling miles before turning and heading up a sixteen-mile-long upgrade at one percent. Not much in the way of scenery as it appeared to be mostly sparsely wooded areas and farmland being converted into homesteads. Had a long section of new pavement that is always a thrill. There were a couple of unpleasant encounters with two aggressive dogs that really wanted to take a piece of my calf. Escaped the first with a decent sprint and some spirited yelling. Second dog got closer as either terrain wasn't right or legs had used up all my sprints. Didn't get bit but tried to confuse the varmint by yelling and swerving into him. Couldn't pull away but he eventually must have got tired or ran out of his territory as he turned back. Course finished by climbing through Gaffney. Wasn't bad riding but there wasn't much memorable about it. Did appreciate not having to climb as much as I have been doing lately.
Second ride of the day was with Joe in Chesnee after he got out of work. We did a twenty-eight mile rolling course with a few small climbs and around a thousand feet of elevation gain. Wind was more of a factor than the terrain. We traded pulls on one eight-mile-long upgrade with a vicious crosswind. We were dreading the turn straight into the wind, but it turned out the headwind wasn't as bad for some unknown factor. Made Joe do some work on the short climbs by doing some short hill sprints, but it probably hurt me more them him as legs were getting pretty tender by the end of the ride. Got nearly a hundred miles in for the day that will hopefully be helpful in preparing for a full century in May and another in June.
