Weather improved from yesterday when it only got up to forty-five with high winds. I stayed off the bike but was back on it today. Ride today was primarily on the A1A along the ocean. Tried to use a trail system to get to the bridge to cross a river with eventual success. It loops around and has dozens of side trails all in a heavily wooded area. Got over the bridge and continued on a trail for a few miles heading north along the A1A even though there was a bike lane on the highway. Trail helped shelter from the north wind. Got out on the highway and then just cranked along for miles and miles. Road is perfectly flat and straight with only occasional breaks to go over bridges or through coastal towns. Scenery though is terrific and helped to improve the ride. Saw a few other riders out and most were heavily bundled against the cold. I was dressed much lighter and quite comfortable when it got into the sixties. Took a loop around South St Augustine where the highway splits for a alternate business route. Thought about riding to the Lion Bridge but traffic was getting heavier as I neared the city proper so turned south and headed back into the wasteland. Thought I would have a fast ride back but after an initial strong tail wind the wind shifted and got a crosswind for most of the way back. Got confused on the trail system after recrossing the bridge to return to my motel. Even though I was backtracking the route out on my computer, I kept missing turns and doing loops. Wasn't unpleasant though and was actually quite entertaining, but it really killed the average speed that really wasn't very impressive for the flat terrain. The only climbs were going over and returning on the bridge that is a five percent grade and maybe half a mile long. Supposedly will warm up tomorrow and get the more normal Florida weather.
