 Landrum, SC
Drove north to Landrum that is on the border of North Carolina. Course today was a loop through NC with a couple of out and backs wings that may have been used for ITTs according to the course description. Sun was out and it was a bit cool starting out, but there wasn't much wind. Course again, thankfully, started in a grocery chain parking lot so didn't have to worry too much about my transport. It did start out on a busy highway with no shoulder so stayed to the side walk for a short distance before hitting a low traffic secondary road. Today's course was a bit hillier than yesterday and started right off with a couple of good climbs. The climbs were similar to most of the foothills I've been riding in for the past couple of weeks. Most around seventy-five feet with an occasional two-hundred footer with average grades between three and five percent. I think the maximum grade I hit was a short section of eight percent. While not seeing any mountains yesterday they were on display today. Rode north into a slight headwind over rolling terrain until I hit the first turnoff for for one of the two ITT sections. This really would be good for an time trail as it was just gentle grades on smooth pavement. It was just a little overs three and a half miles before the U-turn making for a short time trial course. Mountains were not to far away before making the turn and heading east. Got some good speed on the sweet pavement with a tailwind. After that it was back to more rolling terrain. Took one wrong turn that seemed like a better road then I was riding on, as it was more wooded with less traffic. I reluctantly turned back and returned to the course. The second ITT course ran south for five miles crossing into SC before doubling back. This section wasn't nearly as much fun as the first one as it had more of the jigsaw cuts in the pavement making for bumpy riding. I also recognized some buildings from yesterday's ride so was repeating a section of road from yesterday's foray. That section was the low point of the ride and would probably skip it if I were to ride this course again and replace it with some miles on the road I had wandered off on earlier. Had a few more light climbs as I headed back to the start and was hampered a little on the downhills by the rough pavement once I was back in SC. Had to do another short section of sidewalk to get back to the parking lot. Had a good time on the bike again although I am still affected by my cold and continuing to have leg cramps at night. Legs are sore while walking but work five after a couple miles of riding on the bike.
