Stopped in Lake City, FL to do ride a couple of routes I used to train on way back in the eighties. Today's outing was through and around the national forest. Couple of quick miles on SR 441 before heading into the park on the Gum Tree Rd. First mile or so of the road was washboard and looked like it might be a long day as it made for uncomfortable riding. Once into the park the road smoothed out quite nicely. First leg of the ride was twenty-eight miles of mostly flat, straight road inside the park. Only saw three cars on this section and two work pickups with deer dogs in cages in the truck beds. Saw a blinking light a couple miles up the road and assumed it was another cyclist. Picked up my speed a bit and started a chase but figured it might take a long time to bridge even if it was a slower rider. Kept at it for a few miles occasionally losing sight as the road did have an occasional gentle dogleg. Got a good look at the rider as he went up the only climb of the day a bypass over I-10. Caught him soon after and he was shocked to see another cyclist. Rode with him for a couple of miles before he turned around as he was only doing thirty miles today. Continued onward until exiting the park in Taylor. Used to be just a crossroads but suspected there might be a mall there now. It did though only have a small rural store and a church much the same as decades ago. Next leg was along the eastern border of the park riding to the south for a seventeen mile section. Highway had more traffic than the inside the park but seeing a car was still an unusual event. Rolled into Glen St Mary where I would head west to do the final leg of twenty-seven straight miles back to Lake City. I had waffled this morning on whether to start when it was cooler with no wind or wait until it warmed a bit but with more wind. Opted for warmed and had to pay the price as now had to ride into a stiff wind. It was only five miles an hour so seemed light but started to ramp up in difficulty as the legs tired and the temperature rose. SR 90 was a busy highway but had a good shoulder. Actually was happy when I was passed by a tractor trailer as it at least gave me a short respite from the wind. Last few miles was taxing as just watched as the miles dropped at a slow rate. Had started out riding very strong but over the last thirty miles could only keep the speed in the sixteens. First fifty miles were great riding but the last twenty five was a chore.
