 Espanola- Orange Hammock
Decided to head inland today and spent quite a bit of time on paved trails and concrete sidewalk trails. Used the trail system to get across the interstate and into the farmland. Rode down to the Lehigh Trailhead and spent a few miles on the paved Lehigh Trail starting near Flagler Beach. There were numerous alligator warnings on the trail but unfortunately didn't encounter any alligators. There were quite a few walkers, cyclists, runners, dogs and suicidal squirrels on the trail though. Wasn't able to develop much speed on the trail only averaging a little over thirteen. It made for decent riding though and quite a bit of money has been invested on the trails with long bridges through the wetlands and an overpass above HWY 100. After ten or twelve miles of fairly slow going, I was into the farmland around Espanola. I rode quite a bit in the area back in the eighties frequenting the Catfish Century in Crescent City. I was happy to see, other than a couple of new houses, the area hasn't changed much. I did get to push several miles of headwind again today. Roads had little to no shoulder but traffic was light and what there was was forgiving. Heartrate wouldn't go up today so was content with a low speed and low wattage outing. After a little over half the sixty mile ride I was finally into a good tailwind. Wasn't able to make much of it though and was only able to hover around twenty for a ten mile section. I was soon looped back around and back onto some sidewalk trails as I recrossed the interstate and got back in the coastal section. Legs were getting a bit worn by the end of the ride, and I took it easy and worked on my cycling tan.
