Backing off the miles a bit as have my first event of the season- a metric in Arcadia, FL on Saturday. Heart rate recovered from yesterday and was able to get it to react today. Started off at the Lehigh Trail Head on Colbert Lane near Flagler Beach that appears to be a popular starting point for a variety of cyclists. Saw a few preparing for trail riding and another group heading out on the open road. I opted for another open road day but started off exploring a new road on the way for a loop through Tamoka State Forest. Wasn't a good choice as road didn't have a bike lane nor shoulder so ended up doing a couple of miles on a sidewalk trail. Got to the John Anderson Hwy and was able to pick the pace up from the sub-fifteen sidewalk speed to a comfortable seventeen into a cross-headwind. Did a few accelerations as I went through the forest and was happy to see the heart rate rise. Had the big climb of the day on the bridge to Ormond beach where I returned to the John Anderson heading back north. Road surface is really good and had a following crosswind for some pleasant riding. Major drawback is the half dozen stop signs in the residential sections that put a damper on momentum. Had to stop for awhile at a drawbridge to let a boat pass but then got back to riding through the palm trees and wetlands. Rode fairly strong today though it didn't really show up in the watts nor speed. Big downside was lack of sunshine due to cloud cover so no improvement in my cycling tan.
