 Chubb Hollow Pace Line
Today's route was similar to yesterday's but with some additional miles up Chubb Hollow and returning through Himrod. Weather was better as the nasty north wind from yesterday had lessen and shifted to the west. Sun was out and kept things on the pleasant side. Another difference today was we had four riders instead of two and the pace would occasionally get intense. Intensity started early on the first climb out of Watkins to Irelandville. Mighty Young Joe came out of the saddle and charged up the first steeper section of the climb and was quickly joined by Iron Doug. Mark and I, after taking a beating on the hill yesterday, rode more conservatively and spun up the lower section. The middle of the climb has a brief respite and Mark and I were able to catch Joe, who had been dropped by Doug on the steep section. I was able to bridge up to Doug on the final section of the climb and was able to hold his wheel over the top despite my heart rate going from the red zone into the plaid. We went in single file with Doug and I doing most of the pulling into a slight headwind to Reading Center. Once onto SR 14A everyone started taking hard pulls and the speeds remained in the upper twenties until we reached the downhill into Dundee where the speed went into the lower thirties. It felt good to be drafting in a strong line again and the draft was sweet and got to pretty much coast until it was my turn to pull. Rolled into Dundee with a seventeen plus average that was a couple of miles faster than my best time in a few years. The intensity dropped as we rolled through Dundee but picked back up a bit as we headed up Chubb Hollow and again had to go into the plaid zone to stay with Doug as he attacked the last small climb of the day. Once out of the hollow we headed back home with downgrades and a following cross wind. Last few miles was in a fast pace line which consisted of take a pull, hammer to get on the back of the line as it went by, coast, repeat. Miles went quickly until we got about two miles from the final descent into Watkins when Joe fell off the back of the line. The line slowed a little but we kept on going into Watkins where we regrouped then finished off the line with a couple miles of fairly easy flatland. Final average was in the nineteens before we cooled down with a main street ride. Pretty nice riding. Legs felt good after the first climb out of Watkins and still felt good after the ride.
