 Hard Effort
Got a race coming up next week that has too much climbing and too much competition for me to be able to be very competitive but thought I should go out and do a hard effort before getting my butt kicked as really haven't been doing any seriousriding since the computrainer sessions ended. Started off at an easy pace to Watkins then got started on the first climb of the five on the Rock Stream Beaver Dams course. Wind predictions were as usual off. Originally forecast called for a west wind for the first hour then a shift to the southwest for the rest of the day. Thought I could catch a cross wind for the first twenty and two of the climbs. Didn't work out though as caught a north headwind up the first climb. It wasn't terribly strong but after making an effort over the first hill I wasn't able to pick up any time on the flat section of the course. Instead of cruising in the mid twenties I was pushing to maintain twenty. So the first domino of failure had fallen. Got to the bottom of the second climb at sixteen that was not horrible but not where I wanted to be. If I had gotten to the bottom of the second climb a little sooner, I might have been able to do part of the climb with a tailwind. Didn't happen though as the wind shifted to the west and climbed in a crosswind. Had a good second and third climb and crested Church Road with a fifteen average. Had some headwinds on the way to Sugar Hill that kept the average from climbing and got to the highpoint with a fourteen eight. Made a serious effort to get it to fifteen but failed. Had twenty seven miles of mostly downhill to pick up the average but math didn't work out for having a personal best in the low nineteens. Rode steady and even had a good final climb. Caught the promised tailwind for the last seven miles and ended up with a seventeen six. Nothing special but rode strong the entire route without cracking, Wind wasn't kind to me today but it wasn't cruel.
