 Round the Lake II
Had planned on riding around the lake tomorrow but a very favorable wind forecast made me decide to do it today. Supposedly I would get a tailwind most of the way up the lake and right about the time I got to Geneva the wind was supposed to change directions and give me a decent tailwind all the way home. Started out fairly easy through the traffic lights in Watkins and thought I put in a decent climb out of Watkins, but when I checked my average speed at the top, it was a rather slow thirteen four. I remember back in the old days when I would crest with an eighteen and be able to get it over twenty in five or six more miles. The goal of my tired legs was to see how long it took me to get to sixteen six which is the speed my training avatar is set. Had good leg speed and with the aid of the tailwind achieved my goal by Himrod. Next goal was to reach Geneva with an eighteen but had a poor climb out of Dresden and was only able to pull into Geneva with an seventeen four. Saw the only other rider out today in Geneva. Wind had in fact changed out of the north as I left Geneva and was looking at a fast ride home. Things went bad though on the first slope out of Geneva on 96B where I punctured the front tire. Was still running sealant in the front and slowed down for awhile then stopped and tried to get it to seal up as the puncture didn't look to bad. After a mile of slow riding the tire got so soft that I decided to put in my spare tube. Worked out okay but on the negative side my rear tire was showing cords at the start of the ride and of course I had decided I could get one more long ride out of it before I replaced it. Wasn't overly confident for the first few miles as have frequently pinched tubes during roadside installations in the past and another flat would find me either hitching or walking for eight hours. After five miles or so things looked decent and started riding a bit harder but mostly just spun it out and coasted the long downhill from Hector to Watkins. Other than the flat though it was a pretty good day. Lots of sunshine and eighty percent tailwinds. After completing the ride my computer told me it was a lovely recovery ride and I could ride again in four hours. My legs though did not agree.
