 Pink Pedal Metric
Today's event was in Hershey, PA and was a charity memorial ride for a cyclist that passed away from breast cancer. There were three hundred riders for the three different length events-not sure how many were in the metric. Recognized a couple of riders I did the ride with last year. Wasn't sure what to expect so opted to sit in as much as possible and hang on at least through the climb up Mt Gretna. It was a mass start and one sole rider blasted off out of the gate. He was very noticeable as he had his number attached to the back of his jersey by one pin and it was twirling around rapidly in his slipstream. I stayed in the front ten or so as we navigated through some small streets in Hershey. After a couple of miles, we went single file on a bike path for a short distance. This caused some gaps to open and found me in a group of four with the sole rider still visible ahead though at some point he lost his number. Only saw the loner once more as he joined us briefly as he evidently missed a turn. He stayed with us briefly, and then he disappeared completely. Found myself struggling a bit through some rollers with the front group and after one hard pressed climb figured at best I could only draft these guys. Dropped back to a pursuing group of three riders that seemed to be closer to my fitness level. Worked fairly well with the group though only took brief fast pulls usually through gullies where I would hammer the downside and hope my momentum would carry me most of the way through the outgoing climb. Did a couple of these and soon our group caught the front three. Tried to hide in the draft as really wasn't recovering quickly after taking hard pulls. Gaps opened on one short climb, and it was soon two groups of three with me solo off the back. Was able to catch up to the second group fortunately before the first rest stop. Front group pulled into the rest stop a few seconds ahead of us, but my group didn't. Front guys immediately came out of the stop and rejoined us. We rode together for a few miles until one long shallow climb where the front three again pulled away. I led my group up the hill slowly losing ground on the front guys. Though I would soon be passed but must have been climbing well enough for the others to decide to sit in. We didn't lose too much though and caught the others fairly rapidly after the climb. Started the long grade up My Greta where two of the riders accelerated away as the climb started. Decided to sit in for the long climb as I had cracked over the top last year though I was well positioned. One of my group decided to try to bridge to the front and was doing well, until he dropped a bottle and soon was back with my group of five. I survived the climb okay and tried to do some work on the downhill but never saw the front two until we pulled into the second rest stop at the halfway point. Our average speed was nineteen five where the front group was at nineteen seven. Front guys quickly left the rest stop while my group appeared to be camping out. Filled my single bottle, got a couple of sweet treats and chatted for a bit but decided to head out alone. Had really enjoyed riding with the group and was satisfied with my performance but decided I would tour the last half. Didn't really do much on the remainder of the course. Pushed the two remaining climbs at a steady pace one of which passed through the cemetery where the female cyclist is laid to rest. Didn't do much speed work but did ride comfortably. Thought I might get caught by my former group since I was averaging less than seventeen but rode the remaining miles only catching a few riders from the shorter courses. Did the course a mile an hour slower this year than last but rode in control the whole course where last year I tore my body up and finished tired. Felt good as I finished this year even though my average suffered a bit as I missed the final turn and had to loop slowly back to the finish. Riders were friendly again this year and course is mostly rollers. There are a couple of good hills but no hard climbs despite several area hills having a Mt attached to their names.
