 Johnson Hollow
Finally had a visit from the Cramp Fairy yesterday after waking up from a nap. It was an extremely painful and long duration visit and did some damage to a calf muscle. Could barely walk after it so took the day off. I still walked with a good limp this morning and decided to take a test ride and see if it affected my cycling, and if I might be able to spin it out. Headed up the valley towards Millport with a fair tailwind and started easy and gradually increased the power as I went. After a couple of miles didn't have any pain and made fairly decent speed to Johnson Hollow despite the wind shifting to the south for the last couple of miles. Decided to try the hill but resisted the urge to stand up and risk further damage to the calf muscle. Had another abysmal climb and really bogged down. Thought I might catch a break with a tailwind through the Hollow, but it turned back into a headwind for the next few miles. Kept spinning upwards and held a steady mediocre pace. The climbing stops at around thirteen miles in and other than a half mile highway climb it's all downhill. Did some big gear work on the downgrades without issue and made it to the long descent to Watkins. Really don't like to descend that road with a headwind as over a certain section my bike hits some sort of critical harmonic through the eddy currents, and it results in some uncomfortable wobble. Needed to either go faster or slow down to stop the wobble, and I opted for braking today. Ended doing some more big gear work through the swamp with a good tailwind and at least got the average above sixteen without too much effort. Really need to start climbing better but at least the leg held together.
