 Fast Day
Today was a fast day with what was basically a long hilly time trial. I usually test my legs a couple times a year on the Rock Stream Beaver Dams Route. It is basically twenty miles with five gradual climbs to the highest point in the county followed by twenty-eight miles of mostly downhill. Normally I run this route with a south wind but today had a very light north wind. First test is getting through the six traffic lights on the main drag in Watkins Glen. The starting and stopping really effects the average speed. Lucked out today by hitting five of the six in green. Worked hard on the first two-mile highway climb out of Watkins on SR 14. Had a decent climb but lost a little on the false flats to the Rock Stream turn. Normally I can ride with a southern tailwind in the upper twenties for a good portion of this section but couldn't achieve that with the north wind today and had to satisfy with low twenties. Went into the second climb out of Rock Stream to Reading Center a little off a good pace but caught a tailwind on this section and kept a pushing the pace. Third Climb up Church St in Reading Center is usually turns out to be weakest climb as the mile long climb starts out on the steep side. Average usually drops on this climb and did so today. The next few miles are rolling climbs followed by a step climb to the top of Sugar Hill. Got to the top and was around a half mile an hour short of a record time and would have to really push the downhills to break nineteen that was my fallback goal if I couldn't top my best effort at nineteen point three. Had a good downhill to Townsend and spun over the last climb and started to grind out the miles with a slight tailwind to Beaver Dams. Had to turn back into the wind for a bit until reaching Johnson Hollow. There is a short grind that tops out at five percent, and this is where I usually crack if the legs give out but got through it in fair shape today. Last twelve miles is all downhill and kept good speed and was able to finish at a nineteen average. Didn't set a personal best but had my best effort in five or six years. Was happy that I was able to put in a solid effort.
