 Knowing an Inspiration
First Hybrid Commute variant of this year.

Starting the commute, I first biked in to Hilton, loaded the bike on board the bus at 1pm, then picked up the Varsity Softball team at Hilton High School for the drive out to East Rochester High School. Securing the bus in East Rochester, the plan was to do a remote bike ride in the East Rochester/ Fairport area while the games were being played. Then after returning the team back to Hilton, bike home to Spencerport. The plan played out perfectly...

The ultimate goal of my bike excursion was to amble over to Fairport and see if Fred Larson was hanging out.

Upon arriving at East Rochester High School I secured the bus, then unloaded the Dahon and headed out. Making my way to Lincoln/Marsh Road, I stopped at a BK for a "Double Stacker" and some Iced Tea. Then continuing South, I stopped at White Haven in a futile attempt to locate my Father-in Laws resting place and a childhood friends grave site. Leaving White Haven I continued along Marsh Road to Palmyra Road (RTE 31). Turning East I made for Ayrault Road, hoping on a whim to see Fred Larson... As I crested the canal overpass on Ayrault, there was Fred just beginning an afternoon amble. "Larson" I called out. He stopped and looked at me from across the road as I pedaled by. I made a u-turn and stopped, dismounting the bike. We exchanged greetings, walking back to his house we sat on his porch for a catch-up chat on how things have been going.

This guy amazes me. At 82 years old with two artificial hip joints, numerous arthroscopic procedures on both knees, he walks and bikes several miles daily. Catching up to him today was easier as he is in the midst of rehabbing from a PKR(Partial Knee Replacement) performed 3 weeks ago at Unity Hospital.

Having previously described Fred as somewhat of the consummate Renaissance Man, he is more than that. His perspectives and philosophies are profound. Larson is an inspiration.

We had not crossed paths in a year or thereabout, seeing Fred made my day. I have been making a stop at his home every time I'm in the area on a bus layover. It was nearly two years ago when Fred stopped by my house during a 60 mile bike excursion he was making. And it's been 3 or 4 years since we've done a ride together. We're talking about doing a towpath ride East of Syracuse sometime in July...

Having taken the Hilton Varsity Softball team out to East Rochester for a double header event gave me the opportunity to see a great ball game. The girls were fabulous winning both games. Watching them play the second game was entertaining. The Hilton team is a very cohesive unit.

The days activities turned out flawless. Not only did I cut the lawn in the backyard this morning, then earned 6.75 hours pay driving bus, I biked 2:25 hours!

Finished the week with 7 round trip work commutes and 135 miles on bike!

Photo of Fred and me is from August 30th 2008, the day he biked 60+ miles from his house to my house and back.
