 Equipment Failure
I decided to try the longer metric version of the forty-five-mile course I had ridden on Tuesday. Since I was familiar with the first few miles of the course, I decided to put some effort into the ride and try to generate some more speed. Things went well for the first thirty miles as I got through the flattish river sections and started doing some rolling climbs. Started having what I thought were shifting problems as it felt like the bike kept trying to jump gears. Couldn't believe that the chain or freewheel could have been worn at this point as only have a couple of thousand miles on the bike. Problem continued to worsen and by forty miles I had determined that the freewheel was failing. The NSW wheel uses magnets to engage the freewheel and it was failing to quickly engage after disengaging while coasting. I could keep it in gear by keeping continuous pressure on the pedals but after coasting it would not reengage quickly. When restarting from a stop sign, I would freewheel a few rotations before moving. Seemed rather dangerous to me and it was causing strain on my knees. Limped back to the start and did some research and found that the manufacturer requires the wheels to be regreased every six-hundred miles. Maintenance appeared to be removing the seals and regreasing the hub. So ordered the nearly unattainable grease and will try to repair the wheels when I return home. I am hoping it was just caused by water picked up by riding in the rain on Sunday. So down one wheel and got out the spare so hopefully I'll be roadworthy in the next set of mountains on Saturday. Pretty expensive wheels to need maintenance every six hundred miles. Wasn't a good day on the bike.
