 Lake View Riding
Headed up the east side of the lake for a medium length ride. Had to readapt to the increasing braking distance with the rim brakes on my Cipollini as I rode through Watkins, but after a few stop signs felt comfortable again on the bike. Really wasn't sure what to expect from my body after yesterday's aborted race fiasco. After cruising through Watkins at a relaxed pace stood up on the short climb up SR 414. Went better than expected and kept a more focused pace as the road kept rising to Hector. Wind was out of the west today and would be providing a crosswind for eighty percent of the ride. Traffic was light which was good as there isn't a very wide shoulder for the first few miles as the road is perched on a cliffside. Legs felt good and was climbing okay on the long grades. Worked on the downhill to Valois and planned on riding aggressively until Ovid and then decide whether to push on or go into touring mode. Had another decent climb out of Valois to Lodi where the road finally flattens out. Rolled into Ovid just shy of a seventeen miles an hour average that I quickly achieved on a fast downhill section with a strong tailwind east of Ovid on SR 96. Pace calmed down on the rolling grades to Interlaken where I started the last few miles of climbing up a secondary road paralleling SR 96. Not sure what the route number is but it is a really nice road for riding with some good views and a long shallow grade. Saw four riders on the decent off the hill. This is one of the few routes that I ride that I see any significant number of riders. Average had dropped significantly during the long climb so attempted to get it rising again as I started through the rolling terrain west of Perry City on SR 227. It wasn't to be though as legs had lost some snap and more speed wasn't in the cards. Legs weren't tapped out and wasn't even close to bonking but legs would only put out touring speeds as I picked up a little headwind. Saw I was catching up to another group of four riders as I descended from Bennettsburg but turned off onto Skyline just before overtaking them. Though I might be able to close on the seventeen average on the fast descent down Skyline but came up a little short. Still had a really good ride with forty-five fairly strong riding.
