Winds looked favorable for a ride around Seneca Lake, an eighty-five mile trip with four climbs. There were thunderstorms forecast for the afternoon but as long as I kept the ride under six hours that shouldn't present a problem. Course is pretty much separated into four zones with the the first and third quadrants containing the most climbing though each section has a climb. The last section is mostly downhill. Started out climbing out of Watkins with a slight tailwind. Supposedly I would pick up a crosswind when I was out of the valley and on the plateau above the lake and once I got to Geneva the wind would shift to the north giving me a tailwind on the returning half of the ride. First climb went well and did it a little faster than I've been doing it lately. Decided to keep the momentum going and ride aggressively until Glenora where I would turn off the highway onto secondary roads thru farm country. Average speed was climbing nicely when I got to Glenora and kept good speed up until Himrod where my momentum started to waver at around twenty miles in. A couple miles of upgrade later I hit the first big downhill to Dresden to complete the first quarter. Second climb started immediately out of Dresden. It is the easiest of the climbs but enough now days to slow me down. Once over the top it is rolling downhill to Geneva. Ended up just maintaining my speed and started to pick up a headwind as the north wind arrived a bit before schedule. Lost a bit of time passing through Geneva but had arrived with a sixteen-four average for forty miles. As I rounded the north end of the lake I saw there was a quite a bit of activity as they were setting up for the Musselman Triathalon. Saw a couple of bicyclists in Geneva including one on the road ahead of me. I was catching up to him but he went straight towards Waterloo while I turned and headed toward Ovid, Elevation starts to go up immediately upon turning south and continues up at a mild grade until the final two mile climb to Ovid. I went up into Ovid instead of taking secondary roads to Lodi as hadn't been there since their big fire, A good section burned down that was oddly enough right next to the fire station. Didn't do well on the climb to Ovid and lost a bit of time as the legs started to weaken. Fortunately I was almost at the highpoint of the day in Lodi. Had to do another upgrade between Ovid and Lodi to complete the third section and then it was tailwinds and a couple of big downhills left. Made up some lost time between Lodi and Valois that has the last climb. It's not a difficult climb especially with a tailwind as it is only a mile or two at five percent. Last ten miles is downgrade with a final fast downhill into Watkins. I had recovered my average of sixteen-four heading down into Watkins. On the downhill I started getting hit by some raindrops and soon was riding in a thunderstorm that had arrived an hour early. The road gods can be cruel. Rain was soon coming down in buckets and by the time I got to Montour, I was riding in a half inch of water. Downside of that is you can't see any potholes but had ridden there enough times I knew the general area of the holes. Can't really think of an upside. Lost a bit off the average over the final few miles but had spent over five hours on the bike and hopefully burned some calories on a mostly pleasant ride.
