 Wayne's Ride
Yesterday's metric turned into an unproductive adventure. Got up at 3 AM to drive to Newport, PA for a ride I was told about by a rider at the Three Creek Century. It wasn't really advertised, but they did have it on a website from the Newport library as it was a fundraiser for them. They didn't have much information other than the route and that it started at a state park. So drove to the park and looked for signs to the start and found none. Waited around until I saw a truck with a bike in the back drive by and followed it to an area inside the park. There were only a couple of cars in the lot though one of them did have three or four bikes on the roof. Didn't look like much of a turnout which wasn't surprising since it was cold and the valleys were shrouded in fog. Didn't see anywhere to signup and decided to save the entry fee and drive towards home and hoped it warmed up along the way so I could stop and ride. Stopped and had breakfast and started to feel ill and ended up just driving home and not riding at all. Not a good day at all. So today headed out for a ride to Wayne that I have been planning on doing but always finding excuses not to go. It's a hilly medium length ride in the west of the county. Weather was superb with a temperature in the eighties and a north wind that should provide me with a good tailwind on the latter flatter parts of the course. Ride starts out with the same seven mile fifteen hundred foot climb up Mudlake out of Watkins that I did last week. Not sure if I was any faster but seemed easier this week and didn't drip sweat nearly as much. I was faster on the steep downhill to Tyrone and easily topped fifty today. Rather than head south as I did on last week's ride I continued west climbing the rise to Weston before turning onto a climb up the east side of Waneta Lake. Had another good climb and passed another rider descending as I went up. Wayne is at the northern end of the lake and after that got on a state road and continued climbing toward Dundee. SR 330 used to be a pain to ride as it had exposed seams in the pavement that simulated riding of railroad tracks. It appears they have repaved it as now it was a joy to ride on. It also helped that I was starting to use some of the elevation I had gone up and was sailing along quite briskly. Did another climb west of Dundee on a secondary road. It must have a Mennonite church that recently let out as the road was filled with walkers, cyclists, and buggies. Started closing on a group of teenagers on bikes and caught and passed them quite easily just before a rather steep section. Although I had passed a couple of young boys on rather nice mountain bikes noodling along, I must have spurred them on a bit as as I turned at the stop sign at the crest they were not far behind. Had a fast descent to Dundee and then a minor climb over the ridge to Lakemont. Caught the tailwind coming back on the west side of Seneca Lake and tried to get the average up to sixteen but after a strong attempt lost my chance getting through the tourist traffic in Watkins. Had a strong ride overall with some decent climbing for me at least in comparison to how I was climbing a couple months ago. Great day on the bike.
