 Round the Lake II
Spent yesterday on the trainer hoping to freshen up the legs with some spinning. Winds looked favorable to another loop around Seneca Lake. Started out with a tailwind heading through Watkins and hit the half dozen lights favorably and it put me in good shape for the climb up SR14N out of Watkins. Think it was my third try of this hill in the last four days. Today though would not be making the second half of the climb up SR 14A. Got half way up the climb and saw a rider pull out of a motel parking lot on the climb also headed up the hill. Thought if I could catch him might have a riding partner for a few miles at least. Upped my speed to try to catch him before he crested. Closed it down to a tenth of a mile and that was as close as I got. Chased him for eight miles to Glenora without making any gains. He had turned the tenth mile on the climb into a quarter mile on the flats. Rode at my limit but kept losing ground. Lost sight of him before I turned off the main road at Glenora. Not sure whether he was too far ahead to see or if he had made one of the turn options at Glenora. Thought I might have seen him ahead after Lakemont but wasn't sure. Good news was that I was making good time despite my losing effort. Tried to keep the momentum going and did fairly well getting the average above seventeen by Dresden. Did okay on the second minor climb out of Dresden and was able to get the average up to seventeen-five. The wind had shifted gradually to the north that hampered me a little but would help considerably after I rounded the lake at Geneva. Got passed on the last small climb going into Geneva. Rider spun by me on the climb and was probably going twice my speed. Tried to speed up but that didn't happen and he spun off into the distance. Lost quite a bit of speed going through a detour in Geneva and was down to seventeen-three as I made the turn onto 96 and headed south. Kept decent speed all the way to Willard but slowed down considerably after hitting the climbing section between Willard and Lodi. Opted against making the climb to Ovid today and stayed on secondary roads. Average had dropped to sixteen as I turned back onto SR 414S near Caywood. Speed started to climb again on the downhill sections and made the fourth climb out of Valois fairly well. Much better than the suffering I did on the same climb a few days ago. Wasn't able to get the average over seventeen that seemed possible when I left Geneva but did get up to sixteen-eight before going through Watkins. Got a good workout especially over the first couple of hours. Still lacking speed but climbing continues to improve.
