Temperature shot way up and melted most of the snow and ice. Missed the bright sunshine of the morning but got out as it started to cloud up. Felt really good riding without the burden of the winter garb. Rode comfortably up the first climb as was uncertain of how the legs would be after yesterday's race pace trainer fest, and how the back would hold out as it was still a little tender from the morning's weight training session. Went over the top well despite my prepared excuses. Wind was out of the west and provided a gusting crosswind throughout the ride. Second climb went better than the first. Didn't try to hammer the hill and climbed steadily and comfortably. Rest of the climbs were similar and felt really good on the bike for a change. Secondary roads were heavily sanded and the short section of Irelandville Road had so much sand that the pavement wasn't visible. Avoided any flats fortunately from the grit, and took all the corners very gently to prevent a fall. Climbed into the snow belt and cooler temperatures on Sugar Hill. After the five climbs in the first twenty miles, the next twenty five miles was downgrade. Temperatures climbed back up after the descent into Townsend and the riding became pleasant again. Legs started to flag a bit heading down Johnson Hollow. Wind was swirling and quickly cycled between pockets of warm sixty degree air and colder thirty degree air in different sections of the hollow. Ice and snow still remained as it appears the hollow doesn't get much sunshine if February. The sunshine was gone from everywhere by the time I got to Millport as the rain clouds started to move in. Regretted not hitting the first climb of the day harder as I caught the tailwind for the last seven miles as had a thought I would have a decent time going into the finish. Regretted my previous regretting when the legs bonked at mile forty six. Had to do the last two miles with jelly legs, and they seemed to take forever. Still had a great day on the bike and got to work on my cycling tan in February while still being north of the Mason Dixon. Actually was surprised when I saw another rider today.
