 A Second Spring Day
Another beautiful day with the temperature nearing seventy. Tried standing for the first steep section of the first climb and surprised myself by making it to the crest at the half mile mark. Finished the remaining half mile spinning in a crosswind and clocked in at twelve minutes. It was one of my better times in recent years but still off my best at ten and a half. Milked the pace through Odessa a little but got back on it as I headed up the remaining shallow climb. Ended up at 13.4 mph at the top of the seven mile-ish climb of one thousand feet. Hit the downgrade rollers with a tailwind and had a really strong section. Tried unsuccessfully to shift into my 11 tooth cog as the speeds got into the mid thirties. I was disappointed the bike wouldn't shift up, but was ecstatic that it was the first time I had even tried to get in that gear in a couple of years. Rolled into Mecklenburg with a 16.9 average and started the second climb. Stayed in the saddle and spun even though I felt strong enough for some out of the saddle stuff, but I had turned back into a strong wind and thought the additional air drag would cancel any benefit of standing. Had an decent climb and then started losing time through the hammock section. I usually can pick up some time through there but only was able to stay even as the wind hampered the downhill section. Rest of the ride was spinning into the wind and a fast downhill. Thought I might get a decent seventeen average but lost too much through the traffic in Watkins. Saw four riders today along the swamp between Watkins and Montour- two road cyclists, a woman on a commuter and one guy one a circus bike. The latter looked like one of those folding travel bikes with the tiny wheels, I couldn't make out where it folded though. It didn't appear he was having much fun. Ended up with twenty eight strong miles and then spun another ten around town to enjoy the weather.
