Still suffering from after effects of a cold and trying to keep training during it. Felt a little better today and my three conditions for riding outside were met as there was sunshine, only light winds and a temperature over forty-five. Legs were quite sore and didn't seem too energized for the ride so planned on taking a thirty miler with a couple of climbs at a fairly easy pace and just soaking up some sun. Caught a tailwind through Watkins and up the SR 14 climb north of town. Felt okay on the climb but had considerable leg pain on the flats once over the top. Rode over the ridge at Starkey and descended into Dundee at a leisurely pace. Actually felt pretty good on the climb out of Dundee on SR 14A. For some reason the legs felt really good as long as I was out of the saddle, but the soreness returned when I tried to sit and spin. Made the high point of the ride and thought I wouldn't have any problem as the remaining eight miles were mostly fast downhill and a couple miles of flat. Ride got interesting on the back road from Reading Center as I saw a truck backing up on a long driveway at a high rate of speed as I approached. Figuring correctly that the truck was going too fast to stop before entering the road, I did some aggressive braking and was able to stop with a couple of feet to spare. As expected the truck didn't stop and unfortunately the oblivious driver cranked the truck around and kept backing in my direction. I was doing a track stand and my only option seemed to be falling sideways into a ditch, but I didn't react quick enough. Finally the guy must have seen me and hit his brakes and came to a stop about three inches short from hitting my front wheel. I rode by him as he sat in the road and he seemed to be looking down in his cab as if he had spilt something. I'm hoping it caused a mess. Rest of the ride was noneventful. Looking at the data after the ride I found that I had an elevated heart rate throughout the ride which surprised me, since I only even attempted to do any work on the climb out of Dundee. I imagine it has something to do with being sick, but felt fairly healthy after the ride and luckily without road rash.
