 Three Dog Attack
Forecast today was for a Red Flag Day. Seemed like a pretty nice day in fact the second one in a row. Found out later that a Red Flag day is windy and dry. Humidity was near fifteen percent. It worked out nice for riding though as even though it was fairly windy, without the normal high moisture content the wind was fairly pretty weak and had little effect on the ride. After riding fairly hard yesterday, today's plan was a long slow spinning ride. Started out up the steepness that is Havana Glen as I really need to work on surviving steep climbing. Didn't do well but didn't suffer either. After the climb it was fifteen miles of rollers into the weak headwind. Was really enjoying the ride and reminiscing of Python's Bicycle Tour to Corn-a-waalll as I spun up the second gentler climb of the day. Ride went south on the climb when I was ambushed by three cattle dogs. I didn't have enough speed to sprint away, and my evasive actions were unsuccessful as one of the nippers jumped up and latched onto my hand that was on the drop. I shook the little darling loose and unclipped my foot and got a good kick on a second dog that was after my leg. I was forced to dismount and backed into the adjacent hillside and was fending off the assault by swinging my bike at my tormenters. The owner arrived and called his pack off, and they returned to his house after one more foray to get another taste of me. My hand was dripping blood fairly well from two tears and a half dozen punctures two of which were severe. Nothing was spurting though so barring a nasty dog mouth inspired infection, it was a mere flesh wound. Got the apologetic owner to provide me with the rabies vaccination records and gave him a stern warning before I continued with my adventure. Rest of the ride was less intense. Stopped in Chemung for the traditional Vanilla Coke and vanilla Zingers. Store didn't seem to have any Neosporin type stuff. Had another six hundred feet of climbing east of Elmira before hitting the tailwind and downgrade to the finish. Ran short of fluids, possibly a result of the low humidity. Probably would have bonked if it wasn't downhill with a tailwind. Sometimes you win the dog sprints and sometimes you get bit. Que Sera Sera.
