 Round the Lake I
Still under the effects of the flu but road worthy. Wind looked okay for a ride around Seneca Lake to get the body in Century shape. Supposedly there would be a light southwest wind for two hours before shifting to the west and finally blowing from the north. Riding fast was out of the question but thought that with favorable winds, I would be able to accomplish a long slow ride to burn off some calories and possibly sweating out some toxins aided by mostly tailwinds. Caught the predicted tailwind down to Watkins and then had a horrible climb up SR 14 to Gabriels Junction. Couldn't generate any power and spin wasn't very good either. Bad news happened after I climbed out of the valley, as I was hit with a fifteen mile and hour crosswind that was mainly from the west but also a little from the north. Instead of a light tailwind I got thirty-five miles of pushing air. Original plan was only to try to maintain a fifteen pace but with the poor climb and nasty wind was only able to do a little over fourteen for the first fifteen miles. I did a little better on the secondary roads and was able to pick up the pace from Himrod to Dresden thanks mainly to a good downhill. It was back onto the highway at Dresden and back into the grind to Geneva. Lost a good deal off the average on the final upgrade to Geneva and through the city. Finally caught a tailwind at the north end of the lake and at least had a following crosswind for most of the way back to Watkins down the east side of the lake. Thought I was doing okay but would look down and see I was only doing a little over twelve miles an hour. Felt like I was doing better. Followed some Amish buggies up the climbs out of Willard. On a good day I would have passed them but today I was quite comfortable keeping pace with them. Once past Lodi it is mostly downhill and worked on my coasting skills for several miles. Finaaly got a good tailwind over the last couple of miles through the swamp. The ride wasn't anywhere near a sufferfest and was truly a long slow ride. Didn't enjoy it at all though but was thankful that it at least didn't rain on me.
