Spent a few days on the trainer as weather hasn't been much to my liking. Got tired of it, and with another week of predominantly cool or rainy weather forecast, decided to head a bit to the south again in hopes of getting some miles in to combat my ever-increasing weight. Planned on riding in PA yesterday but upon arrival found more cool temperatures. It was a bit warmer pushing fifty but with cloud cover, a cold north wind and high humidity. Bailed on the expected ride and just took a long walk. Drove to Virginia this morning and had another day of fifty degrees and a cold wind. Difference today was bright sunshine. Still didn't feel much like riding but stopped at Charles City and got on the Capital Rail Trail and headed west. To the east is mostly flat riding, but to the west the trail is rolling. There still are quite a few long flat sections but they are broken up by numerous rolling hills. Climbs are mostly around a third of a mile long and generally run about three to five percent. Started off into a cold twelve mile an hour west wind. Did not have a good time for the first hour of riding. The big difference between the trail and my normal riding is I saw well over a hundred riders over the forty-five mile out and back. Occasionally did a little work on the short climbs but mostly just kept my head down and spun. Goal was to shoot for a fifteen average that I'm told is best for burning fat. I was able to keep the average in the fourteens on the way out without too much struggling. After the first hour, it warmed a little and started to enjoy the riding. Headed out to Dorey Park that has a long shallow climb as an approach. Usually don't go much further west on the trail as it soon enters Richmond that involves quite a bit of crossings that have heavy traffic as the trail passes through a commercial district. Felt good on the climb to the park and turned around for a tailwind aided return leg. Got the average above fifteen and then just spun it out with an occasional hard hill pull or a short speed section when the wind gusted. Sun felt great on the legs but still a bit cold for my taste. Next few days should be in the seventies so hope to get some pleasant riding in before heading to PA on the weekend for another metric.
