Weather was a bit suspect today with southern winds again in the mid-teens and rain showers expected midday. Had planned on a fifty miler on open roads but decided on a shorter length that would make sure I finished in the three-hour window before the rain arrived. Also decided on riding again on the Cap2Cap trail that predominately runs east and west to lessen exposure to the wind. Started at the Jamestown Settlement that is at the eastern end of the trail. The terrain on that end is pretty flat and passes through woodland. Wasn't sure whether the legs would show up for work as numbers were better than yesterday's but still far from optimal. Took a side road along the trail for the first couple of miles as the first section is usually crowded with runners and dog walkers early in the day. Got on the trail and had good leg speed but didn't put out many watts. Wasn't going to set any records but had good flow that makes for an enjoyable experience. Wind didn't bother me much until I crossed over the high bridge that passes over an estuary. Wind was blowing hard and even though it was a crosswind, it slowed me down significantly. Once over the bridge it was four miles until I got off the trail and headed into the hills on side roads that provide a little variance to just spinning out mile after mile of flat terrain. There aren't really any big climbs and just is a fifteen-mile half-moon loop before dropping back onto the trail for the return trip. First shower hit forty-five minutes into the ride as I started heading into the hills. It was just a light shower and really was quite pleasant giving off the familiar summer smell of cool rain on the warm pavement. The shower was short lived and only lasted a couple of miles. The road trends downward over the last four or five miles and was hoping for some good coasting but hit the headwind instead. Spinning was over and had to put out some watts just to keep going forward. Was glad to be back on the trail and perpendicular to the unfriendly wind. Other than passing back over the high bridge the trail is pan flat for nineteen miles. On the open sections had to lean the bike into the crosswind to stay upright. Second heavier shower hit with seventeen miles to go. This one wasn't pleasant, soaking me and washing saltwater from my helmet into my eyes. It was also heavy enough to mess with my computers touch screen and was hoping the rain gods didn't start deleting stuff or otherwise messing with the settings. It lasted several miles but stopped as I recrossed the bridge. Finished it off before the scheduled rain showed up. Other than the wind and rain had a good time on the bike with a relaxed ride. Saw quite a few riders out today and am sure they all got wet as well. Appears to be some sort of tour going on as there was a tour group support truck with a collection of riders in attendance in the parking lot when I returned. Think the group was heading out and could look forward to a fun day of riding in the rain.
