 Three Hill Ride
Ended another fortnight off the bike with a short climbing adventure. Went out of town and decided not to take the bike due to the weather forecast of winds, cool weather and rain. That all changed today with a beautiful spring day. Temperature approached seventy, and there was only a slight south wind. Got a late start and so went for a nearly all climb and descent course with three good climbs as penance for my lassitude. Started out on the first climb out of Montour and up Steuben St out of the saddle. Due to fairly fresh legs I was able to stay out for nearly half of the steep section of the climb. Slowed down a little passing the hospital and only got to the light with a rather low nine six. Next section to the track was a bit uneven with good effort on the four and five percent stuff and poor results on the eight percent and over sections. Made the tower with a nine seven and completed the final section to the boulder that isn't there anymore with an eleven one. Had a pleasant down grade section to Monterey then headed up the next climb on CR 22. Didn't get to aggressive on the long shallow climb as I started to worry about the final climb and didn't want to tire myself out too early. Enjoyed the climb with a slight tailwind and crested to probably the counties best scenic view. I didn't remember the downhill very well and descended much slower than I probably needed too. Got to the base of the Sebring Hill climb in Tyrone and thought it didn't look too bad. The road goes straight and the top is clearly visible. Spun the approach and felt okay but things quickly went south before I got to the steep part and was dragging on the six percent section. Once the grade went over ten I hit the bail out gear and went nowhere fast. Thought I might have to get off at the all knowing tree where the steep part begins as I was weaving well ahead of the tree. Got out of the saddle at the tree and actually felt better. Only stayed out a short while but when I set back down I was able to spin again and the steep section went better than the approach. Really enjoyed the five mile descent now that Mudlake Rd has been repaved. Probably could have picked up the average considerably by pedaling more, but enjoyed the coasting sections and didn't want to strain the legs and miss the nice riding weather tomorrow. Ended up with a low average but haven't done the ride in a couple of years as it can get unpleasant for a heavyweight such as myself and really liked the ride. Saw no one else out riding today, but I imagine the more committed riders got out earlier than I did.
