Headed over to Ithaca, NY for Cornell University School of Veterrinary Science's Pedal for Pets half Century. They moved the event up a month this year after cancelling last year's ride due to poor weather. We rode it two years ago in October and the weather was ridable but less than pleasant. This year it was a bit cool but bright sunshine and light winds made for a good day of riding. I was surprised when Joe showed up as thought he would opt out after yesterday's suffering at the Highlander. Turnout was pretty light with only around thirty riders but not really too bad since the ride isn't really advertised, and there are a couple of other rides within a few miles. This is the closest organized ride for us though with a forty minute drive. Didn't plan on putting too much effort into the ride after yesterday's strenuous event. We rolled out of the parking lot and the separation happened quickly with a group of seven of us in the front. Pretty much drafted easily for the first couple of miles in a loose paceline. When the grades started going up Joe and I filtered to the front but didn't push the pace. A rider in red took off on a downgrade, and we let him go for awhile but pulled him back fairly easily. We went back into a paceline, and I took a good pull on the next upgrade to try the legs out. Was surprised that the legs felt good and were putting out descent watts. A rider from Syracuse pulled through and continued the pace up the climb, and thought I might have to do more work than I planned on if I wanted to stay in the front. After the climb there were just four of us left. There really was only one short steep climb outside of Virgil on the course and after that there was only Joe, the Syracuse rider and me left. A woman with time trial bars caught up with us near Dryden Lake but she didn't seem interested in riding a paceline and just stalked us for awhile before fading away. So the three of us kept an easy pace to the rest stop in Cortland. The rest stop was really just a water stop as that was all they had. We headed back toward Ithaca on a fairly busy highway and Joe started feeling his oats and pushed the pace into the upper twenties. The draft was sweet though and didn't have any trouble holding on and ended up taking a couple of fast pulls myself. We dropped the Syracuse rider but waited for him once we got to Freeville and off the highway. Ride turned out to be a little short of fifty miles coming in at forty seven. There really wasn't much climbing but it had quite a few long grades. Turned out to be a pleasant group ride though there were only three of us in the group for most of the ride. Was surprised that there were bags of freshly baked donuts at the finish and they went down really well, They were also giving out bags of dog treats that were popular when I got home. Had a fun ride and was surprised the legs felt as good as they did.
