 Seasonal Use Ride
Took a couple of days off after racing in the rain on Saturday as didn't want to risk the return of my summer cold. Sunday was dry but wind was steady at eighteen miles an hour out of the west and didn't think I could get much of a recovery ride in. Yesterday was intermittent rain so bailed on a ride as didn't want to get wet again. Today though didn't have any decent excuses so planned on catching the north wind to Horseheads then
head out to Erin and descend Swartwood Hill for a forty-five-mile ride. It would have made for a twenty-mile stretch of gradual grade with minimal climbing. The riding to Horseheads went as expected climbing through the valley. Got headed out for Breezeport and found that I needed to drain some ballast but couldn't find a decent spot along the busy highway. Deviated from my original course by going up a side road called Sand Bank. I had been up it once several years ago but didn't remember much about it so kept on heading up. Had a fairly decent climb and kept heading north hoping to work my way back to Swartwood Hill. Ended up atop Varney Hill and could have dropped into Cayuta but that would have made for a short ride. Started working my way east on some poorly maintained dirt roads and finally gave up and headed down a seasonal use road that was also rough surfaced dirt and very steep. Ended up a few miles east of Cayuta and headed home' The ride was only a couple miles short of what I planned and enjoyed a couple of unfamiliar climbs but really didn't care for all the dirt. I can't really see the appeal of riding on gravel. Seems like a good way to damage my equipment or even my body.
