 Telegraph Road
Did another metric length course which was front loaded with two big climbs followed by forty miles of flattish grades. First climb was the seven-mile thousand-foot climb up Mud Lake. The first mile is steep but most of the climb is three to five percent. Kept a good pace and legs felt good. Had a fifty mile an hour descent down Sebring Hill to Tyrone and then a mild climb to Weston. The next climb was up Telegraph Road over the hill to Bath. Haven't done the climb in a few years but have a few memories of it. Rode it once in the Christmas in July in the Bath road race many years ago. I had climbed quite a bit faster in those days than I did today. On the other hand, I was faster today than I remembered climbing the eleven percent grades last time I did this ride. I have less than fond memories of swatting horse flies trying to feed off me as I struggled slowly up the hills. Ended up climbing fairly well despite having an average speed much less than days of olde and wasn't plagued by biting flies. Thought I would try to push a big gear down SR 415 to Coopers Plains that runs slightly downhill along the banks of the Cohocton River. Couldn't maintain very much speed as was hindered by a slight headwind and was a little disappointed as I reached Coopers Plains. Figured I would make up some time as I worked my way back uphill along the banks of Mead's Creek on CR 16 aided by that once pesky headwind as I changed directions. I was again disappointed as I couldn't get the average above sixteen. I remember being disappointed by failing to average twenty on this course many years ago. Still felt good on the final climb out of Townsend before the last five miles of fast downhill to home. Felt good all day and climbed well but just don't have the power I used too. Still it was a fun day on the bike.
