 Five Climbs
More Climbing on tap today but four of the five climbs are mostly gradual with only one being steep enough to get me out of the saddle. After yesterday's standing intervals wasn't sure how much leg I would have. Wind would also be a factor as it was blowing at a good clip out of the south. Only the first two climbs would be into the wind though. First climb was up New Odessa that is my least favorite of all the local climbs. Pretty much an engineered climb of seven percent for a mile and a half. Spun most of it and didn't put much effort into it and results were rather poor. After the hill had six miles dead into the wind before the approach to the next climb up to Sullivinneville on SR 13. Another highway climb into the wind though this one varies in grade but not by much. Legs felt better on this one and had a really strong climb, and it turned out to be best climb of the day. Another dozen miles into the wind though thankfully mostly downhill before the climb up Lattabrook. The next three climbs were ones that used to be regulars on the Tuesday and Thursday night group rides out of Elmira. The first Lattabrook is two or three miles long with a shallow grade at the bottom that kicks up over the last half mile. We used to average around seventeen on this climb back in the day. My average was much, much less. Climbing rate wasn't really that bad, but without the competition I really don't push myself. At least the climb was out of the wind. After the climb it was back into the wind and a few good rollers to the foot of the east side of Jerusalem Hill. It was the steepest hill of the day and also the shortest. Got out of the saddle on the bottom section and had good spin up the remainder for a fairly decent climb. Had to navigate through the traffic of Elmira to get to the West Hill road and start the final climb up the back side of Harris Hill. This one was the longest with a couple of steep sections. Had a tailwind up this one and it wasn't too bad overall. Started to bonk about halfway up and had to start sucking down Gu packs to keep going. Got into the low fifties on the decent of Harris and then had a few more rollers before hitting SR 14 and a good tailwind home. Each Gu pack only lasted me a couple of miles and had to slow up considerably when the Gu packs and my blood sugar level ran out. Cruised easily over the last twelve miles to finish off the day. Turned out to be a pretty good day with to really good climbs, two decent and only one poor.
