Comments: It had been a few years since my last visit to the Moose (maybe 2-3 years ago). The last time I had seen it -it was worse for the wear. As a treasured photo stop for many travelers, I had hoped someone would have rehabilitated the Moose and fortified its stump to weather the elements...
Today, on a ride with Bob D., we went to the stump's last known hangout, and the Moose was nowhere to be seen. The Moose was gone but not forgotten!

Comments: 2020 has not been the year I had planned. Who could have planned for a year like this one? But all in all, I have no complaints and am grateful for the cycling I have been able to do. Much thanks to Bob D. and Bob H. for their Cadre companionship on most rides. But in the "olden days" (the pre-retirement days), our cadre rides would have been just the icing on the cake. Bike commutes to and from work were an easy way to rack up thousands of miles in a year. I'll be hardpressed to reach 1000 this year -but I'm o.k. with that.

On today's solo ride, I needed another 13 miles to reach 100+ miles for November -done! That makes five 100+ mile months for the year.
About 6 miles into the ride with the Globe, my 'non'-ebike, I heard a vaguely familiar 'TING!' It reminded me of a spoke breaking while pedaling along. It's been many years since I upgraded to heavy-duty wheels, but I remember that sound from the years before the upgrades.

At the moment I heard that tinging sound, I had just finished climbing out of one of several ravine ascents that are along the route. The ting sounds were several musical notes in a rhythm of stressed spokes as the bike rolls along. I checked for wheel runout as I rolled -the wheels appeared to run 'true,' and the tinging stopped. Maybe it was some unseen road litter caught up in the spokes that worked free? I forgot about it and rode on.

At 10 miles in, I stopped for a water break and remembered the noise. Examining the wheels at first glance, they looked fine and ran true. Upon closer examination, on the rear wheel, some of the nipple tensioning flats were corroded and missing chunks -thus exposing portions of the threaded ends of those spokes. Those severely weakened nipples were barely holding tension on their respective spokes. I climbed back on the saddles and gingerly peddled the last 4.6 miles home.

Comments: 95 bpm HR; 170 Kcal; Debating now whether to include my 2020 indoor miles as part of my total cycling distance. In past years, I had decided never to include "indoor miles" but did always counted "indoor hours." However, since becoming an avid ebiker and developing a clear understanding that ebike miles and non-ebike miles require different levels of effort over a given distance, it calls for a need to clarify total miles. The only adjustment between ebike miles and non-ebike miles would be calories burned per ride.

I had calculated at one point that my typical moderate effort burns about 11 Kcal/min. So, Calories per minute is still a viable estimate on an ebike.

In recognizing that many BJ riders DO count indoor miles as part of their total miles for any given year, it still is a potentially meaningful statistic.

Even as my outdoor miles may not reach 1000 this year, I am sure that adding "indoor miles" will put me over that 1000 mile statistic. So as the year winds down, I have decided to keep to mileage statistics "outdoor miles" and "total miles."

Comments: The Quest has been hanging in the rafters for more than two years. My previous last ride was in August 2018

It is said cycling on a recumbent obligates a different set of leg muscle responses. I never was one to notice any leg muscle variance, but it is very user friendly on wrists, elbows, spine, prostate, and buttocks. In the past when people took the time to inquire I was often asked about neck discomfort. I've noticed Recumbent bike options list attachable headrest support brackets. Never have I thought it was a worthwhile accessory until today. My neck and shoulder muscles got quite a workout. 2+ years of aging off a 'bent showed a noticeable decline in an aspect of my fitness.
