 Another Bad DAy
It was warm and the sun was out but that was pretty much the only decent part of the ride. Started the ride with tender legs but felt okay on the first climb though it was at a much slower rate on the same lower section as yesterday. Once I got over the hill, the wind kicked up on offered me no respite for the rest of the day. Struggled for a while but finally gave it up and went to touring speed as though I had a good spin and felt good out of the saddle, I had no mid-range push and withered in the wind. Got to the northern most section of the ride and thought I would pick up a good tailwind and cruise home. No such luck though as at best I had an occasional crosswind as the wind continued to be mostly in my face. Things got even slower as several miles of the route between Himrod and Starkey had been recently milled and left a horrendous road surface. The vibration really didn't help my tender legs. Got back on the highway with my batteries running low and things went well until the final long downhill. Instead of an easy coast back to town I got to navigate through a couple of miles of traffic cones and construction. The cones didn't allow enough room for cars to pass me though several tried and came within six inches of my handlebars. Finally got a gap and started to ride in the middle of the lane so there was no chance of passing me but didn't feel to safe in a fifty five mile an hour zone. Ended up stopped on the hill by a flagman and waited for several minutes with no movement. Ended going back up the hill and finding a side road to bypass the construction. Would have been quicker to wait, but at least I was moving and didn't mind the extra climb. Had to go back into Watkins and hit more bumper to bumper traffic. Hate to have to abandon going through Watkins as it probably involves forty percent of my routes, but it is getting pretty dangerous and will only get worse as the tourist traffic increases. Felt pretty burned out after the ride, but at least I burned some calories and got some work in on my cycling tan.
