 Hard Effort
Weather looked unusually great for riding, so figured I would take a hard ride to test the legs and put an edge on before Sunday's race. Had a decent effort up Old Odessa and passed the first time check in Odessa with an above average time. Kept pushing up the second half of the climb up the grade of SR 228 and assisted by a tailwind had an above average time at the top. Thought I might have a shot at an eighteen mile an hour average overall if I could make Mechlenberg with a seventeen. Pushed the big gear on the downward rollers but came up short. Had a cross wind and could only keep the speed in the mid twenties and really needed a southern tailwind to keep the speed in the upper twenties. Got into Mecklenberg with a 16.3 and took the next climb in the big chainring. Everything was hurting evenly, so figured I was putting out my maximum effort. Legs were heavy, lungs were burning, stomach burned and the back was sending out warning messages. Had to push into a headwind though and maintained the pace but couldn't pick it up. Things started to peter out through the final rolling section as just couldn't beat the wind. Had a fast downhill into Watkins and arrived with a 16.8 and knew the eighteen was gone but thought with a good effort on the final four miles of flats I could finish in the mid seventeens. Bottom fell out of it completely as I hit the heavy traffic and construction going through Watkins. Had to hammer the last two miles just to get back up to a 16.8. Made a strong effort but couldn't maintain the pace for the entire thirty miles. Good news though was I just missed the thundershower that passed through Montour moments before I arrived. Strong ride though a failing effort.
