 Hollenbeck's Road Race
Another beautiful Upstate New York spring day with temperatures barely above fifty and a light rain. While it was ten degrees warmer than last Sunday's rainfest it still wasn't even close to the forecast of 60 degrees and sunshine. At least there was only a light wind, or I probably would have bailed on today's race. But for the Veteran's group I entered in it was only one lap of the twenty two mile course, so I figured what the hay. There were seventy riders that showed up for the event that were split into three groups. All the veteran's rode together though we were split into five or six sub-groups by age. Not sure how many of us there were, but we probably numbered between twenty and twenty five. Roads were dry at the start and first three or four miles of downhill rollers was fairly sedate with only a couple of riders that attempted short flyers that were quickly neutralized by aggressive wheel sucking. First hill was a mile and a half to two miles long and gradually increases in grade that maxes out around ten percent. Mighty Young Joe fell off the pace early and I had a decent climb for me hanging on for about three quarters of the way. Iron Doug did the best of our three riders though he stayed with a very small peloton. He ended up finishing fifth. Three riders were able to break free and rode on to the finish unmolested. I was able to get over the top with another rider a few seconds behind another pair that had also been dropped. The rain commenced at mile six and we rode hard through the next set of rollers to try to bridge up to the group but came up short. We got caught around mile ten by another group of two or three, but only one of them stayed with us on the next climb. I held on until mile fourteen when my chest tightened up, and I felt very poorly and faded off the back. I got caught by the two other riders that had been recently gapped and they passed me right before the wall and was unable to grab a wheel as they went by. Actually climbed the wall fairly well and maintained the same pace to the finish as the riders ahead but was unable to close the gap. Ended up finishing with sixth out of the nine sixty+ riders. Much better climbing then last year with a strong fourteen miles. Have to work more on speed changes and figure out what is going on with the chest pains. The warm donuts at the finish were greatly appreciated.
