 Long Moderate Paced Ride
Planned on a doing a metric today at a slow pace. Was up most of the night with a tight chest and only got five hours sleep. The Big German showed up to ride today, and my slow easy pace really didn't happen. Weather was ideal with the temperature rising into the mid seventies and a very light north wind. We did the Ovid- Interlaken route with a bonus six mile climb from T-burg to Steamsburg. Pace was actually easy until we hit the short climb up SR 414 out of Watkins. The road is very scenic and in fact was especially scenic today due to the light wind. Seneca lake was perfectly calm and had a mirror finish. Seeing the clouds reflected in the lake is something that rarely happens. But the road has a very limited shoulder and fairly heavy traffic. We pretty much did a two man paceline up the grade to Ovid and kept a brisk pace. Had good leg speed and felt better than yesterday, though I still had the tight chest for the first fifteen miles. Starting to think I have an upper respiratory infection that is causing my grief. Chest feels sort of like it did when I had bronchitis, though I don't have any mucus and don't feel nearly as weak as I did then. Suppose that it is in the early stages. All in all though its better than a heart condition. We rolled into Ovid at a fairly good clip and picked up a light tailwind and some welcome downgrade to Interlaken. We were able to ride abreast on SR 96 superior shoulders and the pace was more relaxed. Climb from T-burg to Steamsburg got rather competitive until I said hold enough and backed off. I was starting to see spots on the climb and was working harder than I did in yesterday's race. Once we got to the microwave tower at the top the ride got much, much easier with eleven hundred feet to shed over fifteen miles of tailwind. Had great weather and a great ride but not really the easy recovery ride I had planned. But I'll take it.
