Warmed up early today so got to advance my planned ride by and hour. Rode up SR 14 through Elmira and into Fassett, PA and then climbed Roaring Run to Bird Creek. It was mostly upgrade to Fassett and didn't put in too hard an effort. Spun well to Pine Valley then put it in the big chainring for the run through Horsesheads and Elmira. Saw three actual road cyclists on the way to Pine Valley and they turned out to be the only riders I would see throughout the day. Lack of effort showed in my average speed that was just touching sixteen as I hit the lights in Elmira. Had hoped to get it up to seventeen before heading up the highway climb to PA. Felt good on the highway climb and on the early sections of Roaring Run. The climb is shy of five miles long before the summit at Bird Creek. Mostly grade with two or three good kickers and a long drag over the last mile. Worked the heart and legs pretty well on the climb and crested at fourteen six. Had a fast descent into Mosherville and strong ride back to the NY line. Wind was light today and didn't cause any problems. After climbing for a good part of thirty five miles had to deal with thirty odd miles of downgrade. Things were going very well until I got back to Elmira, Thought I should be able to average seventeen without too much effort as it was mainly downhill with occasional tailwind. Things fell apart as I navigated through Elmira as hit a detour and was plagued by an overabundance of red lights. Frequent starts and stops took a toll on my legs and lost that loving feeling. Lost a big chuck of time despite being relatively flat road. By the time I got through Horseheads my average had dropped back to the low fifteens. Couldn't see any realistic way of getting the seventeen and would need to hammer the last fifteen miles to even be able to get a sixteen six, the speed set as my virtual pacer. Had a fairly strong last ten miles but was only able to pull out a sixteen three. Other than the average it was a pretty good ride. Enjoyed the sunshine and the climbing.
