 Climbing Day
Decided to do some more climbing and thought a trip to Ithaca would be a good choice. Normally ride out through Mecklenburg and descend into Ithaca on SR 79 and climb back out on SR 13, but since I rode to Mecklenburg yesterday didn't want to do a partial repeat. So went backwards to what I normally do. While I had great legs yesterday, today they were wooden. Went up New Odessa at a leisurely pace then upped the effort a little bit on the way to the Junction. It was a great day for riding with the temperature getting into the low eighties and only a light wind, at least for the beginning of the ride. Severe thunderstorms were forecast for later in the day but had enough time to get the fifty miler in. Coasted the three mile highway descent into the third world socialist paradise that Ithaca had become. Took SR 13A to bypass the city and got through okay without having my wealth redistributed or harassed by irate motorists. Went over to ride up SR79 that is road with an attitude. Climb starts out with a mile or so of ten percent grade then continues for another couple of miles at seven percent. Didn't do much with tired legs but climbed steady in the saddle and felt strong but not fast as had no leg speed. There is a good shoulder on the road but due to aggressive drivers I wouldn't recommend group riding on it. After the first fine miles of climbs there is a short descent into Enfield before hitting a series of ascending mega-rollers to Mechlenburg, Temperature got up to eighty six at one point but then the clouds started rolling in and the wind picked up dramatically. Opted to do a couple more short climbs to Bennettsburg rather than push a headwind to Odessa. Pace was slow today but basked in the warm temperatures and really enjoyed the ride.
